While impressionism was rampant in Belgium around 1900, a number of artists in Ghent resisted capturing fleeting impressions. Together with young intellectuals, they also oppose capitalism and increasing industrialization. One by one they leave the city and settle in the neighboring village on the Leie: Sint-Martens-Latem. In the twilight years of Symbolism, the artists immerse themselves in nature and rural life, in search of originality and depth. For their work they use stylistic devices from the past, but their art is authentic and refreshing. Never before has the first Latem artist colony in the Netherlands been given full exposure.
