Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) drew throughout life both on new, clean paper, but equally on all paper that was within reach (the back of other drawings, backs of letters, invitations, bills, etc.). Thorvaldsen's drawings are first and foremost sketches for his sculptures and reliefs, more or less elaborate, but almost always of great artistic value and expressiveness. The drawings are an important source for our knowledge and understanding of the process of creation and context for Thorvaldsen's sculptural art.
