The present study constitutes part of the work undertaken by the Institute in response to the resolution adopted by the General Assembly at its fortieth session requesting the Secretary-General of the United Nations to "prepare a report on patterns of consumption and related socio-economic indicators ... based on the work done by relevant bodies in the United Nations system and in particular the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development".
