Picasso, The saltimbanques1980

by E. A. Carmean

41 paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, and documents, relating to Picasso's Family of Saltimbanques in the Chester Dale collection and to the theme of vagabond performers, marked the centennial of Pablo Picasso's birth.

The works were assembled by E.A. Carmean Jr., curator of 20th-century art. Research by Ann Hoenigswald of the conservation department detected 2 other circus compositions beneath the surface of Family of Saltimbanques. Gaillard Ravenel and Mark Leithauser designed the exhibition and Gordon Anson designed the lighting.
