In 1977 Anita Bryant and fundamentalist protestants got all riled up in Dade County (Miami, essentially) because a local bill sought to protect the gay community from discrimination in the workplace and housing market. Arguably, that movement is the beginning of the religious right's contemporary anti-LGBTQ activism in America, amongst other conservative culture-war wedges. I'm attempting to draw a straight(ish) line that connects Bryant to a local COVID-era panic over "inappropriate" material in our small county library. This is my reading list.
